Surface Soil Moisture Maps for Rur Catchment, Germany

This July 2026 release provides a ten-year dataset of Surface Soil Moisture (SSM) maps over the Rur Catchment in Germany, generated from Sentinel-1 (S-1) Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) observations. The dataset consists of SSM maps at 250 m spatial resolution, including the retrieved mean soil moisture value and its associated uncertainty, covering the Rur Catchment for all Sentinel-1 relative orbits that intersect the area.

By exploiting the frequent revisit capability of Sentinel-1, the SMOSAR STCD approach separates short-term variations in surface soil moisture from the more slowly varying contributions associated with surface roughness and vegetation dynamics. The videos below illustrate the spatial and temporal evolution of surface soil moisture across the Rur Catchment throughout the ten-year observation period.
